Botticelli Reimagined PDF
By:Mark Evans,Stefan Weppelmann
Published on 2016-04-12 by Victoria & Albert Museum

|The Florentine painter Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) is one of the greatest artists of all time. Renowned for the iconic Birth of Venus and Primavera, his work has become part of our collective visual memory, influencing product development, fashion design and artists as diverse as Andy Warhol, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, René Magritte and Jeff Koons. But Botticelli's fame today was by no means a foregone conclusion. Quickly forgotten after his death, he was only rediscovered as an artist in the nineteenth century -- and much of what we know of his work has been pieced together from fragmentary evidence; only three of his works are signed or documented. Since then, ''Botticelli'' has been interpreted in many different ways, and has led to many questions. How does a painter acquire international fame? What made Botticelli a pop icon? Why are his works considered timeless? What is it that makes him so ''European'' that his Venus appears on the 10 cent coin? What we can say -- safely -- is that Botticelli, more than any other Old Master, inspired and continues to inspire modern and contemporary art.| -- Publisher's description

Art for Sale PDF
By:Dirk Boll
Published on 2011 by Hatje Cantz Pub

How is an English auction different from a Dutch auction? What distinguishes a vintage print from a period, modern or estate print? Dirk Boll, Managing Director of Christie's in Zurich, explains these and other technical terms, providing invaluable insights into the machinations of the art market: the increasingly symbiotic relationship between auction houses and art dealers, the strategies used by the big auction houses, recognizing and creating trends, the profiles of the various art fairs, promising new areas for collectors and the future development of the art market are just some of Art for Sale's fascinating themes. As a doctor of law, Boll is as competent at shedding light on the legal parameters regulating the acquisition of art, as he is in elucidating the difficulties surrounding looted art and restitution procedures. Art for Saleunpacks the art market in a knowledgeable, humorous style, and from a true insider's perspective.

Exhibiting Outside the Academy, Salon and Biennial, 1775-1999 PDF
By:Dr Andrew Graciano
Published on 2015-02-28 by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.

In recent years, there has been increasing scholarly interest in the history of museums, academies and major exhibitions. There has been, however, little sustained interest in the histories of alternative exhibitions. The present volume contextualizes eleven case studies to advance overarching themes among alternative exhibitions from the late-eighteenth century to the late-twentieth century. These include the issue of control in the relationship between artist and curator, and the relationship of alternative exhibitions to the dominant modes, display structures and cultural ideology.

Curating and the Educational Turn PDF
By:Paul O'Neill,Mick Wilson
Published on 2010 by

In recent years, there has been increased debate about the incorporation of pedagogy into art and curatorial practice-about what has been termed the `educational turn'. In this companion volume to the critically acclaimed Curating Subjects, artists, curators, crities and academics respond to this widely recognised sense of art's paradigmatic re-orientation towards the educational. Consisting primarily of newly commissioned texts, from interviews and position statements to performative texts and dialogues, Curating and the Educational Turn also includes a small number of previously published writings that have proved pivotal in the debate so far This anthology presents an essential enquiry for anyone interested in the cultural politics of production at the intersections of art teaching and learning Curating and the Educational Turn is indispensable reading for anyone interested in curating, art practice and pedagogy as creative, engaged and potentially transformative activities. This timely and important collection provides a forum for what has been described as the `educational turn' in curating and its more broad-based manifestations in art, education and culture.

Lot's Wife and the Venus of Milo PDF
By:Boris Thomson
Published on 1978-03-30 by Cambridge University Press

Professor Thompson's subject is the uneasy position of art within Marxist ideology: what part can the arts of the past play in the new society? On the one hand there was the sense of a continuing cultural tradition, more or less independent of ideological change symbolized in the image of the Venus of Milo, and on the other, the iconoclastic demands for a complete break with the past in all its forms made by revolutionary artists, who found in the myth of Lot's wife a symbol of the attractions of the past. Originally published in 1978, the book discusses the problems and paradoxes involved from a general theoretical point of view and in the work of individual artists. Professor Thompson suggests that the power inherent in art to resist social and ideological changes undermines all rationalistic theories of art, those of the Marxists and those fashionable in the West.

By:Klaus Kertess
Published on 2011 by Gregory R Miller & Company

Klaus Kertess has long been one of the most consistently original, innovative, and insightful voices in the art world. After launching in 1966 and directing for ten years the influential Bykert Galleryùand with it the careers of several of today's most important artistsùKertess turned full time to writing about and curating contemporary art. Seen, Written brings together for the first time a wide selection of his essays from the last three decades. These texts expertly chart the course of American art from the 1960s through the present, exploring the foundation of art as well as the global context of art making in the twenty-first century. With lucid, beautifully written prose that deeply conveys both the look and the experience of art, Kertess's essays offer new understandings of well-known artists and point to those working today who are making groundbreaking and lasting contributions to contemporary art practice. Artists discussed in depth in the book include John Marin, Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, Malcolm Morley, Brice Marden, Alfonso Ossorio, Barry Le Va, Alan Saret, Keith Sonnier, John Chamberlain, Peter Hujar, Carroll Dunham, Matthew Ritchie, and Chris Ofili. Interpreting Art in Museums and Galleries PDF
By:Christopher Whitehead
Published on 2011-12-12 by Routledge

In this pioneering book, Christopher Whitehead provides an overview and critique of art interpretation practices in museums and galleries. Covering the philosophy and sociology of art, traditions in art history and art display, the psychology of the aesthetic experience and ideas about learning and communication, Whitehead advances major theoretical frameworks for understanding interpretation from curators’ and visitors’ perspectives. Although not a manual, the book is deeply practical. It presents extensively researched European and North American case studies involving interviews with professionals engaged in significant cutting-edge interpretation projects. Finally, it sets out the ethical and political responsibilities of institutions and professionals engaged in art interpretation. Exploring the theoretical and practical dimensions of art interpretation in accessible language, this book covers: The construction of art by museums and galleries, in the form of collections, displays, exhibition and discourse; The historical and political dimensions of art interpretation; The functioning of narrative, categories and chronologies in art displays; Practices, discourses and problems surrounding the interpretation of historical and contemporary art; Visitor experiences and questions of authorship and accessibility; The role of exhibition texts, new interpretive technologies and live interpretation in art museum and gallery contexts. Thoroughly researched with immediately practical applications, Interpreting Art in Museums and Galleries will inform the practices of art curators and those studying the subject.

Issues in Curating Contemporary Art and Performance PDF
By:Judith Rugg,Michèle Sedgwick
Published on 2007 by Intellect Books

To stay relevant, art curators must keep up with the rapid pace of technological innovation as well as the aesthetic tastes of fickle critics and an ever-expanding circle of cultural arbiters. Issues in Curating Contemporary Art and Performance argues that, despite these daily pressures, good curating work also requires more theoretical attention. In four thematic sections, a distinguished group of contributors consider curation in light of interdisciplinary and emerging practices, examine conceptions of curation as intervention and contestation, and explore curation's potential to act as a reconsideration of conventional museum spaces. Against the backdrop of cutting-edge developments in electronic art, art/science collaboration, nongallery spaces, and virtual fields, contributors propose new approaches to curating and new ways of fostering critical inquiry. Now in paperback, this volume is an essential read for scholars, curators, and art enthusiasts alike.
