A critical survey and catalogue of the permanent collection of the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery with selected photographs from Special Collections and University Archives.St. Lawrence University's photography collection has grown in the last thirty-five years to include some 600 individual photographs as well as 28 portfolios and artists' books comprising over 325 photographs.Two nationally recognized photographers, Bill Gaskins and Esther Parada, contribute feature essays addressing the politics of representation. Gaskins comments on the significance of race and photography in the academy, and Paradas presents a critical response to the work of Paul Strand and Manuel Alvarez Bravo in Mexico.Photographs at St. Lawrence University is intended to serve not only as a comprehensive catalogue of the photography collection but also as a catalyst for dialogue regarding the role of such collections in institutions of higher learning.
